In today’s Real People feature, we got to sit down with one of the fastest rising fashion designers of today: Rosenthal Tee. With a Masters Degree in Fashion Design at Instituto Marangoni in London, and completing courses in Patterncutting at the London College of Fashion and Jewellery Design and Textile Print Design at Central St. Martins College of Art and Design, this proud Filipina has worked for renowned labels such as Izmaylova, Mich Dulce and Kinder Aggugini. She is also a member of School of Fashion and the Arts as a part-time instructor in Fashion Illustration and Portfolio Development. With her sophisticated taste and breathtaking pieces, Rosenthal Tee is definitely making a strong and silent impact in the world of fashion.
1. Your designs are very soft, sophisticated, and feminine. Where do you get the inspiration behind them?
I definitely get inspiration from my travels and from the years I spent in London. I generally look up to women who are successful, empowered and elegant, which are qualities that I always try to convey with each piece I do.
2. Who’s your favorite local and international designer, and why?
On a local spectrum, I look up to designers such as Inno Sotto, Albert Andrada and Joel Escober. I love the intricacy and care for detail they put into every garment they do. Besides being accomplished with shows and exhibitions here and abroad, they are also some of the more humble personalities I’ve encountered, which makes me respect them even more. On an international basis, I constantly look at designers such as Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli for Valentino, Carol Lim and Humberto Leon for Kenzo, and Raf Simons for Christian Dior. I think they definitely imbibe qualities of contemporary and traditional elements in dressing that I try to emulate in my own designs.
3. If you could pick any Hollywood actress to design a gown for, who would it be and why?
Given the chance, I would kill to dress actresses such as Charlize Theron and Angelina Jolie. I love how these women are both empowered and feminine at the same time, and aren’t afraid of showing it off.
4. What does your daily beauty regimen look like?
On a daily basis, I begin and end my day with Shiseido Elixir Superieur cleansing foam and hydrate my skin with Face Shop’s Flebote Collagenic XP V – Lifting Emulsion.
As much as possible, I keep my makeup during the day as light as possible, perhaps only a dab of MAC Mineralize Moisture SPF15 Foundation, a light brush of Peachykeen (Sheertone Shimmer) blush, Fling light-taupe eyebrow pencil and Beguile full-bodied taupe eyebrow gel to set my brows all from MAC, and Maybelline’s Hyperglossy liquid eyeliner. I generally only apply eyeshadow either from Shu Uemura or MAC in the evenings or during formal appointments and events. Capping this off, I always make it a point to remove all makeup debris at the end of the day with Body Shop’s Camomile Gentle Eye Makeup Remover.
5. What is your one beauty indulgence?
Twice a month I try to make it a point to have an indulgent manicure-pedicure-foot spa combo. As I’m always on the move, its become harder to set aside the time to just relax and pamper myself so once a free day happens to pop up, this is definitely something I would do to just relax.
6. Best beauty secret that you learned from your mom?
There are too many to list in! But some not so typical advice she’s given is to always remember to drink lots of water with a dash of lemon to hydrate and kill off any acidity internally. She’s the health and beauty guru in the family and another off the mainstream advice she’s given me is to never get your joints (ie legs when tired)—in the long run this helps avoid varicose veins and actually stops lamig from entering the body at its most fatigued state
7. Best beauty discovery from abroad?
With all the new beauty products entering Manila at the moment, I don’t think there’s anything I haven’t discovered that we don’t have here in the city at the moment. I am a MAC and Shu Uemura fan, so makeup wise those two labels got me covered. On a health/skin-maintenance point of view, anything Shiseido or Face Shop does the trick for me since those are light enough to remove any free radicals on my skin without extremely drying or aging my skin in the process. Asian skincare labels are definitely better for me versus western labels in terms of that.
8. Beauty item you can’t live without?
Definitely my MAC eyebrow set of Fling light-taupe eyebrow pencil and Beguile full-bodied taupe eyebrow gel on a purely aesthetic basis, topped off with my MAC Mineralize Moisture SPF15 Foundation for skin protection. I get laughed at by friends for always wearing foundation even to the beach, but they don’t realize that it’s to prevent any more uneven skin pigmentation, which is hereditary in my family.
9. Who is your beauty / style icon and why?
My beauty and style icon has got to be a mix of both Sophia Loren and Diane Keaton. I love how timeless they both look and dress, and even with age, I don’t think they’ve ever faded in terms of their beauty and fashion taste.
10. One word that best describes you.
Bullish. I’m a Taurus and I have a predilection for horoscopes so I think this term best describes my approach to life—I’m always excited to create and determined to see my ideas at its best capacity.
