There’s no denying it: summer is here. For real. With a vengeance. This year, I feel it now more than ever. I don’t even know if temperatures are any higher, but I used to spend my summers sitting in the air conditioned confines of an office, you see. Now that I’ve given up full-time employment, I have no choice but to sweat it out… in my living room… at noon… with nothing but an electric fan on full blast to keep me from evaporating. So it’s hit me that there are two things I gave up when I decided to freelance – 1) a twice-monthly paycheck, and 2) air con in the day time.

So what’s a girl to do to keep cool? Luckily, we’ve got tools at our disposal – I switch from creamy lotions to gels, borrow products from the guys (theirs tend to have these cooling menthol formulas I love), and rely on waterproof, smudge-proof makeup. Another must-have: facial mists. There’s nothing like a cool blast on a humid day to wake up and refresh you. In fact, I take it a step further and do it right in front of the electric fan – try it right now, I insist! If that doesn’t instantly bring your body temperature down a few degrees, I don’t know what will!

One of my faves is Kosmea Hydrating Rosewater Mist – I discovered this all-natural Aussie brand when I tried out their facial cleanser last year, and I’ve been a fan ever since. Spray this on after washing off makeup, when you need to cool down post-workout, or any time you need a boost. Bonus: the rosewater essence smells really good, too!

If you’re looking for another set of soothing benefits, Vanilla & Co.’s Witch Hazel Beauty Tonic is a life saver. Witch hazel, vitamin C, and tea tree work together to calm skin while cooling you down, plus it’s infused with a dose of lemon juice. It takes a few more sprays since it comes in an atomizer instead of an aerosol-type tin, but I’d definitely pack this on my next beach trip!
