Food, travel and lifestyle blogger of The Spoiled Mummy, Grace Barbers-Baja, is admired by many women for her blessed and blissful life. Grace shares with Glamourbox her beauty secrets and must-haves, and things she truly values in life.
1. When did you start your blog “The Spoiled Mummy” and how did you get into blogging?
I launched the blog last July 2012 so it’s only been less than 9 months & so far it’s been good! I started writing it because I have always been the constant resource or “go-to” person amongst my family & friends whenever they have questions about food, travel, parties & even beauty! So upon realizing that they always “bother” me with their questions every now & then, they suggested that I just write all it down, for everyone to see. Having an address online like the blog seemed to be the perfect place to share all my experiences, tips & ideas.
2. What does your daily beauty regimen look like?
As soon as I wake up, I meditate, pray & think only good, happy & positive thoughts. Then I splash my face with just cold water – to wake me up & boost blood circulation on my face. I then put on my eye cream (I’m using La Prairie) because we all get puffed up eyes after waking up, especially if we don’t get enough hours of sleep.
This is followed by my facial sunblock after which I know I am ready to head out to the gym. I exercise almost daily (5-7 times a week). After sweating it out, I take a cold shower & again, put on my eye cream, then sunblock & some light makeup.
At night, I use my favorite beauty cleansing oil (from Shu Uemura), wash my face with VMV facial scrub & once again, apply my La Prairie eye cream. I don’t use any facial moisturizers (even at night) as it makes my skin break out.
3. What’s your one beauty indulgence?
My one beauty indulgence is my eye cream. This is one beauty product I can’t live without & I use it twice to thrice a day. Eye creams can be quite pricey compared to the other skin care products we need; so for me, having a good & reliable eye cream although an expensive one, is my one beauty indulgence!
4. Any beauty secret that you learned from your mom?
I learned everything I know about beauty from my mom. She was the one who taught me that taking care of one’s skin even at an early age is very important, from using a loofah while in the shower, to going to the derma for facials to putting on my daily sunblock & yes, to applying my eye cream conscientiously day and night.
5. What is/are your must-have beauty product (s)?
For skin care – body lotion, facial sunblock & eye cream.
For make up – concealer, blush, lip balm, & loose powder.
6. Best beauty discovery from abroad?
Most beauty brands (makeup & skincare) are cheaper in Hong Kong — by a whole lot! So I buy a lot of my stocks from there!
7. Which beauty trend do you find absolutely horrendous?
Super long & weird eyelashes. I really do not understand this trend, as well as the “no eyebrow” look seen in print ads & the runways.
8. Of all the places you have visited, which one do you love going back to and why?
I’ve always loved Hong Kong. I go there at least twice a year. It’s the most convenient place to go to because it’s so close by. An hour & a half on the plane and you’re easily transported to a whole new world! Love that it’s a very cosmopolitan, modern city & has great shopping and a fantastic dining scene!
I also love Japan especially during springtime when the Cherry Blossoms are all a-bloom! Almost everything there, from food to environment – is fresh, clean & pretty. Japan also has the most number of the world’s best restaurants (beating Paris by a big number) in terms of having the most Michelin-starred restaurants in the world!
9. We know that you love to organize parties/events (and great at it!). If you were to organize a party for a famous person, who would this be and why?
I’d love to organize a party for Martha Stewart, who is the original creator of all things practical & pretty. She started this whole trend of coming up with parties & events that are handmade and fabulous. She can make anything with her hand, she can cook, she can bake – truly, the ultimate hostess! She has also been successful at turning her simple hobby of entertaining with flair into a big business brand. Now that’s someone I would really love to have as a guest!
10. One word that best describes you?
Can it be two words? Mother. Wife.
My family is my life and my all. They are my must-haves, and they really are my ultimate beauty secrets!
